Rand Water says the demand is too high

The DA in Mpumalanga has written to the Human Rights Commission to intervene in Govan Mbeki Municipality’s ongoing water shortages.

The Govan Mbeki Municipality met with the Rand Water’s management responsible for account payment and operations of water supply last week.

According to the municipality, the purpose of the meeting was to find out what is the cause of the water shortage.

The municipality said the water utility committed that the improvement of water supply to the municipality is of paramount importance and also their technical teams will work together to improve the water supply situation.

Makenosi Maroo, Rand Water spokesperson said on Friday Rand Water has been communicating that the municipalities are consuming too much water and the demand is too high.

Maroo said as a result, the water utility will have to abstract more water than it is licensed to do, to supply in the demand.

She said Rand Water has to ensure that it doesn’t over abstract and for that reason, the organisation has to manage the supply of water to various municipalities.

In the meantime, the DA in Mpumalanga has written to the Human Rights Commission to intervene in Govan Mbeki Municipality’s ongoing water shortages.
