Reservoirs and taps are dry in Govan Mbeki Municipality

Govan Mbeki Municipality posted on its social media pages that Rand Water is pumping water to the Govan Mbeki Municipality at half capacity over the weekend.

KINROSS – Residents of Marikina section in Kinross are queuing for water from a tap at gravesite tap.

These residents said they have not had water in their taps since last week and are forced to queue for water at graveyard.

According to some of the people in the queue, they were unaware Rand Water is pumping water at half pressure to the Govan Mbeki Municipality.

Most reservoirs throughout the municipality are empty. The water level in others are extremely low and there is no pressure for the water to reach household taps.

Throughout last week, statements from Rand Water and Govan Mbeki Municipality about breakages, power outages and high demand causing the water utility to either seize pumping water or to pump at half capacity, have flooded social media.

The executive mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality, Nhlakanipho Zuma, this morning refuted speculations that Rand Water has reduced water pressure to GMM because of non-payment.

“It is untrue that Rand Water is throttling GMM. We are paying Rand Water as per the agreement,” he said.

Zuma concluded by saying that Rand Water would have issued a notice of water pressure reduction beforehand if that was their intension.

Low water pressure to no water supply may occur in high-lying areas. GMM appealed to consumers to use water sparingly and for essential use only, until the situation improves.

“The municipal water team is continuously monitoring water reservoir levels to ensure there is sufficient water supply.

“Water tankers are being provided to areas experiencing a supply interruption. The municipality will continue to keep the community updated on any further developments regarding the water situation.”
