GMM mayor talks about licences and Johannes Stegmann Theatre

He said the appointed company has been given 30 days to complete its investigation.

The Govan Mbeki Municipality Executive Mayor Nhlakanipho Zuma said a company has been appointed to investigate the R160 000 used to upgrade the licences of four municipal employees.

Zuma was addressing the media on October 3, at the municipal council chambers. He said the appointed company has been given 30 days to complete its investigation.

“We have for the past four weeks received questions about four of our employees who were taken through a process of upgrading their driver’s licences from code 10 to code 14 at an amount of R160 000. This averages R40 000 per employee.

“I know this looks very expensive and the indication of the preliminary report has shown us that there were certain activities which included lessons that were undertaken by those drivers. We also have to consider the processing and registration of those licences to the licensing department.

“We decided to institute an investigation through the office of the municipal manager,” said Zuma.

On the alleged missing R3m meant for the refurbishment of the Johannes Stegmann Theatre, Zuma referred the media to the Mpumalanga Department for Sports, Art and Culture and the Mpumalanga Economic Growth Agency (MEGA).

Zuma said the municipality affirms that they cannot attest to any renovation or upgrading that took place at the theatre and have no knowledge of such money.
