Swimmers in Secunda show their skills

Braam Koekemoer is among the top 40 swimmers in SA.

Young swimmers had a chance to show off their skills during the Aqua Adventures LTS and Gala Swim Club (AASC)’s first inter-house fun gala on September 13.

Organiser Riana Bezuidenhout said the gala was organised for level 3 (last level when they learn how to swim and when freestyle and backstroke have been completed), level 0 (first gala level for swimmers who will be taught how to swim full backstroke, a breakdown of butterfly style, the start, turns and finish of freestyle and breaststroke) and level 0/1 swimmers (the second and final level of the introduction to galas a swimmer on this level will begin to compete for qualifying times for levels 1 and 2).

The more competitive swimmers had their turn in the pool on September 14. These swimmers were coached for over a year in three or four different swim styles.

All the swimmers received an award, and special recognition went to the junior and senior victrix/victor ludorum winners Emma Botha (junior among the girls), Wain Koekemoer (junior among the boys), Caylin Back (senior among the girls) and Braam Koekemoer (senior among the boys).

For many swimmers, these were their first galas, and they aimed to encourage them to participate, build confidence and promote water self-rescue among them and their parents.

Bezuidenhout said, “It’s amazing to see how strong these swimmers are getting just from the swim drills and high-intensity training programmes they had practised before our first gala. We, as coaches, can see how each swimmer has grown stronger, fitter and faster.”

The competitive level swimmers will participate in October in Mbombela. One of AASC’s swimmers, Braam Koekemoer, recently qualified to participate in the Level 2 category and finished among the top 40 swimmers in the country.

Bezuidenhout thanked the management of the Sasol Gymnasium for the venue and said their goal is to introduce swimming to the community, the schools in Secunda and the wider Gert Sibande region.

“Not all children are hockey, netball, rugby, cricket players or athletes, but they might be a swimmer,” said Bezuidenhout.
