Standerton community unites to fight fire at golf course

Several organisations banded together to fight a fire that affected the Waterfront Lodge, the golf course and a farmer’s land.

A fire ran rampant at the Standerton Golf Club on September 5.

According to Frans-Awie Vermaak of the Lekwa Fire Protection Association (FPA), the fire started when electrical cables sparked on the Waterfront Lodge property. It spread to the golf course via these cables and lept onto a farmer’s land.

The Standerton Fire Brigade, Kasselman Security Services, golf club members, AfriForum, the FPA and farmers in the area responded swiftly to manage the fires in the respective areas.

On the golf course, the fire spread into trees and thick bushed areas, causing problems for the firefighters.

The flames in some areas burnt higher than the small trees on the course. On the river’s other side, the fire raged all around a farmer’s house, but luckily, it could not spread further.

The volunteers who showed up to deal with this crisis continued their efforts until the last bit of smoke had vanished.

“The response we got to our call to action was staggering. It makes us proud to see a community stand together in times of chaos,” said Vermaak.

The information totalling the damage was not released at the time of going to print.
