Police grab man (20) for the rape of senior citizen (90) in Morgenzon

Major General Mkhwanazi asked the public to allow the SAPS space to investigate and get justice for the victim.

A 20-year-old man is set to appear in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on September 2 for the alleged rape of a 90-year-old woman.

According to a statement released by the office of the provincial police commissioner in Mpumalanga, the victim was asleep in her home in Morgenzon, when she was attacked and raped.

“Shockingly, reports indicate that the suspect is known to the victim’s family, which adds an even bigger layer of dismay to this tragic event,” stated the release.

Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, Acting Provincial Commissioner of Mpumalanga has condemned these actions.

Police responded to the allegations swiftly, tracking down and apprehending the suspect shortly after the incident.

Major General Mkhwanazi asked the public to allow the SAPS space to investigate and get justice for the victim.

“Such acts of violence against vulnerable members of our society, particularly our elderly, are disgraceful and will not be tolerated. We commend our officers for their prompt action in ensuring that the suspect is cornered and will be brought to court.

“The SAPS remains committed to putting our citizens’ interests and safety first, and we will ensure a thorough investigation is conducted by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.

“It is also imperative for the Police and the community to work together to protect the vulnerable members of the society and to bring those who commit such heinous acts to justice.

“Together, we can work towards creating a safer environment for all, ” said Mkhwanazi.
