Victory Taekwondo celebrate 30 years in Secunda

A tribute was paid to Taekwondo's South African founders and celebration of Victory Taekwondo's more than 30 years of service to its students.

Victory Taekwondo Family Centre and Karate For Kids hosted a tournament at the Lillian Ngoyi Centre on August 24.

This was in celebration of Victory Taekwondo’s service to its students for over 30 years and its international wing in America, which has served its students for over 55 years.

They paid a special tribute to the South African founders, among others Johann Beukes junior, Johann Beukes senior and his wife Cathy Beukes, who is now retired, but still familiar faces in and around Secunda.

Their instruction, guidance and support also created South Africa’s first two master instructors – master JP Vorster and master Rohan Verwey – proving again that Secunda delivers multiple hidden gems.

Students showcased their talents in the Victory Taekwondo Family Centre’s tournament held at the Lillian Ngoyi Centre, in Secunda, on August 24.

“It was special to be hosting the tournament at the same location where it started over 30 years ago at the then-called Casper Breedt Centre,” said Erika Vorster.

Students of all ages and from clubs all over South Africa showcased their talents in divisions of traditional form, traditional weapons, sparring, combat sparring, creative weapons, creative form and team sparring.

Of the 111 competitors, 41 students were from Secunda, winning 58 gold, 54 silver and 34 bronze medals.
