Mkhonza twins are still waiting for their promised house in eMzinoni
Their mother said they are still waiting for the house which the mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality promised would have been completed before the beginning of summer. Building began before the national elections.
The suffering Mkhonza twins and their mother, Phindile, are still waiting for their promised house.
Lwandile and Lwanele Mkhonza, 17-year-old twins from eMzinoni, are suffering from a rare autosomal recessive disorder known as xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) that leads to aggressive skin and other types of cancers.
Their mother said they are still waiting for the house which the mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality promised would have been completed before the beginning of summer. Building began before the national elections.
Phindile is concerned about her sons, as heat is detrimental to their health. She hoped they would be in their new home before September, but she had not received information about the progress.

The family is living in a shack, which becomes extremely hot in summer. The heat causes her son extreme agony.
She said she would be happy if the municipality could fast-track the allocation to their new house before the summer.
Last year, the then Mpumalanga MEC for Public Works, Mandla Ndlovu, who is now Mpumalanga Premier, together with the Govan Mbeki Municipality’s Mayor Nhlakanipho Zuma, visited the Mkhonza family and promised them they would get a new house before the elections.
Phindile said this promise was not fulfilled and they still live in their three-room shack.

According to her, officials in the premier’s office visited a week ago and promised to return, but she is still waiting. Phindile also accused some municipal officials of spreading lies about her.
“Some officials told the politicians I do not want the house being built for us. Why would I say that? We need that house. Perhaps it is because of these lies that the leaders are delaying the allocation of our new home,” lamented Phindile.
“I wish these people will realise how much damage they are causing,” she said.
Zuma responded by saying the house is part of the ANC’s housing project programme. According to him, the house is completed and they are waiting for the Mpumalanga premier to hand it over to Phindile.
