Lekwa suspends tariffs at dumpsite for now

According to Ward 8 Clr Alberto Franco of the DA, the dumpsite tariffs were placed on hold due to waste collection services not being up to standard.

The community was recently outraged by the tariffs charged at the entrance of the dumpsite.

“Disposing of waste at the dumpsite is not free. However, the municipality has put tariffs applicable at the landfill site on hold until further notice,” said Lubabalo Majenge, the communications officer of the Lekwa Municipality.

According to Ward 8 Clr Alberto Franco of the DA, the dumpsite tariffs were placed on hold due to waste collection services not being up to standard.

“You cannot charge the public extra tariffs when the normal service does not function correctly,” he said.

The municipality further stressed the importance of weighing waste at the dumpsite entry. Lubabalo explained that this is extremely important for record-keeping and reporting to the South African Waste Information System.

Franco confirmed this, saying, “It is of utmost importance for the information logged by the dumpsite to be as accurate as possible for compliance with environmental legislation.”

The municipality urges anyone asked to pay a fee at the dumpsite to call Waste Management on 087 562 5211 or 087 562 5214.
