Secunda couple warns others to watch out for scammer

Do not deliver items until money reflects in your account.

An elderly couple wants to warn others against a scam where people pretend to buy items advertised on Facebook and disappear without paying.

The couple advertised a generator on Facebook for R9 000 and received a phone call from a woman saying she wanted to buy it.

“She sent us the proof of payment, and it looked legit,” said the woman.

“She then said she was going to send someone with a bakkie to pick it up and we gave the person whom she sent the generator.”

The couple began getting worried when the money still not reflected in their account a few days later and started calling the woman, to no avail.

“Her phone was off and went on voice mail immediately,” said the woman.

The couple saw the woman’s profile on Facebook, where it states she lives in eMbalenhle. They reported the case to Secunda Police but have not yet heard anything from the police.

The Ridge Times asked the police for comment and the spokesman for eMbalenhle and Secunda police stations, Constable Busi Mthethwa said, according to the investigating officer, the docket is currently with the prosecutor and they have made no arrests.

She also said the investigating officer did not receive the information that the woman lives in eMbalenhle and that anybody can lie on Facebook and say they live in a certain town.
