Levels at Grootdraai Dam at 96.2%

The report also showed that average water levels in the province are lower than the same period last year as the average dam levels recorded a slight improvement from 97.1% to 97.2% which is lower than the 99.1% recorded last year.

According to a statement from the Department of Water and Sanitation dated March 27, it is the only listed dam that recorded a drop in water levels in the Gert Sibande District in Mpumalanga.

The reservoirs report showed a decrease from 97.0% to 96.2%.

The listed dams that recorded improvements in the district include Nooitgedacht Dam increasing from 96.1% to 97.2%, Vygeboom from 100.7% to 100.9%, Westoe from 67.2% to 68.1%, Morgenstond from 92.2% to 92.8% and Heyshope from 99.9% to 100.5%. Westoe Dam remained unchanged at 70.9%.

The report also showed that average water levels in the province are lower than in the same period last year as the average dam levels recorded a slight improvement from 97.1% to 97.2%, which is lower than the 99.1% recorded last year.

In the Water Management Areas, the Olifants WMA increased from 86.2% to 87.3%, lower than the 89.8% recorded last year, and the Inkomati-Usuthu increased from 96.6% to 97.1%, still lower than the 100.0% recorded during the same period last year.

In terms of districts, Ehlanzeni increased from 99.5% to 99.8%, Gert Sibande increased from 95.0% to 95.2% and Nkangala dropped from 98.2% to 98.1%.

The department urged the public to continue using the available water wisely, sparingly and in a more conservative manner as South Africa is a water-scarce country.
