Gert Sibande District Municipality cares about the environment

In support of the 10 000 000 tree planting programme within five years, the municipality has prioritised the promotion of indigenous trees to integrate forest-based measures into national disaster risk reduction strategies.

The Gert Sibande District Municipality continues to play its part in making a long-lasting impact on the environment.

According to a statement of the past week, their environmental management services unit visited Azalea Combined School on January 23 for a biodiversity and conservation management awareness programme to promote the greening of the district programme.

In support of the 10 000 000 tree planting programme within five years, as announced by the office of the presidency in 2020, the municipality has prioritised the promotion of indigenous trees to integrate forest-based measures into national disaster risk reduction strategies and to assist in the provision of greenery, rehabilitating and restoring diversity in the district settlements.

Mitigating climate change impacts, the accumulation of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, was reduced.

Altogether, 10 indigenous trees were planted, and learners received 30 spekbooms.

Educational awareness facilitated by the relevant officials was provided, much to the excitement of the teachers and learners.

These trees include the Bolusanthus, the silver tree, Combretum erythrophyllum, Searsia lancea (commonly called kareer) and Celtis Africana (white stinkwood).

According to the statement, the municipality planted 1 683 indigenous trees across the district since the announcement.

Officials from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment and Seriti were present to support the programme.

Member of the mayoral committee responsible for community and social services, Nombuso Zulu, led the activity. Mapaseka Molaba, a member of the Lekwa council, municipal leaders, and various government officials joined her.

Azalea Combined School received trees a fortnight ago.
