Councillor warns of RDP scammer in eMbalenhle
The culprit does not even have a key to show the inside of the house to prospective buyers. They only get an outside look.
Ward 20 Clr Masabatha Khubheka warns eMbalenhle community members to be wary of a scammer selling his RDP house to several people.
The house involved, is at Greenfield in eMbalenhle. According to Khubheka, the scammer sold the house to five people, and each buyer paid him R50 000.
Khubheka received complaints from the buyers who had paid for the house but never received the transfer deed. They only received an affidavit signed and stamped at the eMbalenhle Police Station.
“I am surprised all these people got an affidavit done at the eMbalenhle Police Station. Are the police unaware of this man who went to them five times requesting an affidavit as proof that he is selling the same house to five different people?” asked Khubheka.
“When the first buyer came to me, I tried contacting the scammer to find out the truth, but his cellphone was off.
“As the ward councillor, I have to sensitise all community members not to fall into this trap because December is here, and scammers will use any opportunity to take your money,” said Khubheka.
Khubheka claims the culprit does not even have a key to show the inside of the house to prospective buyers. They only get an outside look.
He also said when they demand to see the inside, the ‘seller’ tells them the key is with his relative outside of eMbalenhle. Khubheka said he is unsure if cases were opened against the alleged RDP house seller.
The eMbalenhle Police spokesperson, Constable Busi Mthethwa, said the police do not get involved in money-exchanging deals. That is the service of lawyers.
Mthethwa also advises people who have been scammed out of their money to file complaints at the police station so the police can arrest the conman.
The scammer is known to Ridge Times. This journalist tried to contact the alleged owner of the RDP house several times, but his cellphone was off.
