Water levels at Grootdraai Dam in Standerton at 81.7%
According to the department, most listed dams are above 90%, a few above 80%, two above 100%, one above 70%, one above 60% and just one below 50%.
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) state of reservoirs report, dated October 16, shows that water levels in Mpumalanga remain stable above 90% despite slight decreases.
The average levels in the listed dams dropped from last week’s 92.8% to 91.9%.
The province also recorded declines in the water management areas (WMA), with the Olifants dropping from 85.8% to 85.2% and the Inkomati-Usuthu dropping from 93.6% to 92.8%.
Ehlanzeni District dropped from 94.6% to 94.1%, Gert Sibande from 89.6% to 88.3% and Nkangala from 96.5% to 95.7%.
According to the department, most listed dams are above 90%, a few above 80%, two above 100%, one above 70%, one above 60% and just one below 50%.
In the Gert Sibande District, Vygeboom and Morgenstond dams remained unchanged at 100.4% and 97.7% respectively, with the rest of the listed dams recording declines.
Above the 90% mark, Heyshope Dam dropped from 97.7% to 97.5%. Above 80%, Grootdraai Dam dropped from 83.4% to 81.7% and Nooitgedacht Dam dropped from 83.4% to 81.9%.
Jericho Dam dropped from 76.5% to 76.0% and Westoe Dam dropped from 58.0% to 47.1%.
The department encouraged the public to use available water wisely and sparingly, taking into consideration that South Africa is a water-scarce country.
They concluded by saying water conservation is key to reliable supply and security for current and future generations.
