People walk in Secunda for freedom from human trafficking

The A21 Freedom Walk will take place again next October.

People walked from Secunda Mall to the CBD and back on October 14 as part of the A21 Freedom Walk.

This walk aimed to raise awareness about human trafficking and slavery. Some 132 locals participated.

The organiser, Nadia Heyns, thanked everyone involved in making the event possible and who helped with the logistics before, during and after the march.

Heyns said human trafficking is the exploitation of men, women and children for their bodies and labour.

According to statistics, about 158 000 people are trapped in various forms of human trafficking.

“Most South Africans are unaware of this crime that is hidden in plain sight because most do not even know what human trafficking is or how to spot it,” said Heyns.

“This is why we walked to bring awareness.”

Heyns plans to host the A21 Walk for Freedom again. People trapped in human trafficking or slavery can contact the toll-free number 0800 222 777.
