Volksrust Police recently confiscated a rhino horn, firearm, ammunition and tower battery, among others

The police searched the vehicle and found the rhino horn wrapped in adhesive tape and concealed in a bucket, a 303 assault weapon with four live rounds, a silencer and a tower battery.

Three suspected rhino poachers abandoned their vehicle in Volksrust, leaving behind, among others, a rhino horn, firearm and tower battery on October 9 at about 22:00.

According to a recent statement from the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, after a high-speed chase, the Volksrust Police forced the suspects to abandon their vehicle to evade arrest.

A silencer and ammunition were also left behind.

The SAPS were doing a stop-and-search operation on Mandela Drive, Volksrust, and directed a Toyota Corolla to stop, but the driver ignored the instruction. The vehicle sped off, so the police tailed it.

The suspects then exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

The police searched the vehicle and found the rhino horn wrapped with adhesive tape concealed in a bucket, a 303 assault weapon with four live rounds, a silencer hidden in the bonnet, and a tower battery.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the Corolla was not a stolen vehicle.

The owner has a pending case of possession of an unlicensed firearm after an incident in Hlabisa, KZN, in September 2021.

The SAPS confiscated the items for further investigation.

The police urged anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects to call the investigation officer, Lieutenant Colonel Pretty Mavuso, on 079 692 0615, the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or use the MYSAPSAPP.

All information provided to the SAPS remains confidential, and callers can stay anonymous, should they so choose.
