Attack on traffic cops in Evander: suspect appears in court

The officers were overpowered and one weapon was allegedly stolen.

A suspect appeared in the Evander Magistrate’s Court on October 3.

Jacob Khumalo faces charges of discharging a firearm, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and also damage to public property when vehicles of the Mpumalanga provincial traffic department were either damaged or set alight at a roadblock on the R546 between eMbalenhle and Evander on August 4.

Khumalo’s arrest came after a group, believed to be taxi drivers, attacked the traffic officers near the Walker Park Golf Club.

The officers were overpowered and a weapon was allegedly stolen. The windows of two vehicles were smashed in and another two vehicles were set alight.

Zukiswa Mxhotjelwa, Evander police spokesperson, said at the time that a case of taxi violence was opened.

The case was postponed to November 2.
