Water levels at Grootdraai Dam in Standerton unchanged at 89.0%

The department encouraged the public to use available water more sparingly because it has no substitute.

The Department of Water and Sanitation called on the public to conserve water because levels continued to drop in listed dams and water management areas in Mpumalanga.

They also asked the public to intensify their water conservation efforts to ensure water supply security for current and future generations because South Africa is a water-scarce country.

According to the State of Reservoirs report of September 11, not a single listed dam in the province recorded an improvement, and only three remained unchanged, with the rest recording declines in water levels.

The dams with no changes in levels were Witklip Dam at 100.2% in the Ehlanzeni district, and the Grootdraai and Vygeboom dams at 89.0% and 100.3% in the Gert Sibande District.

The report also showed that the average levels dropped further from last week’s 95.8% to 95.3%.

In the Water Management Areas (WMAs), the Olifants dropped from 88.3% to 87.9% and the Inkomati-Usuthu dropped from 96.0% to 95.5%.

In the districts, Ehlanzeni dropped from 98.5% to 97.8%, Gert Sibande from 92.4% to 92.1%, and Nkangala from 98.7% to 98.4%.

Apart from the Grootdraai and Vygeboom dams, the rest recorded declines in water levels.

The dams that recorded declines include Nooitgedacht, dropping from 89.3% to 88.0%, Jericho from 80.6% to 79.8%, Westoe from 60.1% to 58.0%, Morgenstond from 98.5% to 98.3% and Heyshope from 98.9% to 98.7%.

The department encouraged the public to use available water more sparingly because it has no substitute.

They further called for proactive and responsible citizenry in water use and encouraged the public to practice water conservation and not wait for restrictions.
