EMPD nabs fake SAPS officers near Bronkhorstspruit
Two of the suspects were indeed members of the SAPS.
The EMPD arrested four men suspected of multiple crimes. When patrolling on the R25, the members noticed a suspicious white VW Polo fitted with blue lights on the dashboard.
Inside were four men with masks.
The members made a U-turn and stopped the suspicious Polo. Upon request, the four occupants produced their SAPS appointment cards.
The officers continued to search the vehicle and found an R5 rifle, a police-issued bulletproof vest and three 9mm pistols with ammunition.
According to the EMPD media liaison, Constable Thabiso Makgato, the State did not issue the items.
It was later confirmed that two suspects were indeed members of the SAPS.
All four of the suspects resided in Mamelodi.
The suspects were charged with impersonating a police officer, fraud and possession of illegal ammunition.
Makgato said the police might add more charges after further investigation.
