Former VKLM Speaker and bodyguard shot in drive-by shooting

Arriving at the hospital, the police found the critically injured Segone and Mgidi admitted to hospital with gunshot wounds.

The former speaker of the Victor Khanye Local Municipality, Robert Khaya Segone, and his driver and bodyguard, Loti Mgidi, have been shot.

The Delmas police were called to the Bernice Samuel Hospital in Delmas at about 21:30 on June 24.

Arriving at the hospital, the police found the critically injured Segone and Mgidi admitted to hospital with gunshot wounds.

According to the police, a bodyguard, Thubani Khoza, with a white Nissan NP200 was escorting Segone and Migidi, driving a white Toyota Avanza, when they came under fire.

Khoza told police that he was escorting Segone and Mgidi when a white Toyota Yaris with a GP registration suddenly drove past at high speed and randomly opened fire on both the Nissan and Avanza.

Khoza was unharmed, but the shooter or shooters managed to critically wound Segone and Mgidi.

Segone was wounded in the right upper chest, right arm and left leg. Mgidi was shot in his right upper arm and right leg with an exit wound through his left leg.

According to information, Khoza then loaded the wounded Mgidi into the back seat of the Avanza and took them to the hospital.

Backup from the AfriForum Valke Neighbourhood Watch was called upon. Police and members from the neighbourhood watch, led by Khoza, were taken to the crime scene in Delpark, Delmas. Twenty-three rifle cartridges and one pistol cartridge were found on the scene.

Segone, notoriously known for his flamboyant lifestyle and group of nine well-dressed and intimidating bodyguards, landed himself in jail in 2020.

He was arrested on October 26, 2020. The arrest came after a series of events where Segone allegedly intimidated a senior police officer at the Delmas Police Station and threatened to burn down the station.

After spending three weeks in jail, bail was granted at R50 000 and Segone was released. (Streeknews, November 27, 2020).

Soon after his release, Segone returned to his office at VKLM.

However, on April 14, 2021, VKLM released a statement that Segone had been removed from his role as the speaker of VKLM with immediate effect.

Segone left the ANC shortly before the local government elections in 2021 and formed his own organisation, the African Voice Progressive Party (AVPP) which won three seats by which he managed to get back on the council.

In a media statement released by the AVPP on February 22 this year, the organisation stated that it expelled Segone and Sibusiso Makhawane from the AVPP in January following a disciplinary process.

According to the media statement both Segone and Makhawane were found guilty of contravening the constitution of the AVPP.

“The AVPP would like to emphasise that we distance ourselves from the ongoing disruptions of mines, the municipality and businesses around Delmas.

“We note that some people are part of the disrupting community members wearing AVPP regalia and would also like to emphasise that those are not AVPP members, but Khaya Segone’s parallel structure members,” said Piet Mahlangu, leading founder of the AVPP, at the time.

Segone is allegedly facing 30 charges, which included public violence, kidnapping, discharging a firearm on municipal premises, incitement to commit crime, assault and crimen injuria, including assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and intimidation. However, at the time of going to print this could not be confirmed.

According to Captain Carla Hartley, media spokesperson for the Delmas police, the gunmen who shot Segone and Mgidi, are unknown and still at large.

Hartley also confirmed that Mgidi has since been transferred to the Witbank Hospital while Segone was transferred to a private hospital.

Both Segone and Mgidi are in serious condition, but stable.
