Disabled association talks to elderly about eMbalenhle Clinic’s possible closure

Masilela said it was dangerous for elderly people to queue outside the clinic because addicts and criminals staying at the Sijongile Ndamase Hall harassed and robbed them

The Zimeleni Disabled Association recently met with senior citizens at the eMbalenhle Sasol Club to discuss the Langverwacht Clinic that could soon be closed by the Mpumalanga Department of Health.

The Wendy house used as a clinic for the seniors had deteriorated, and the organisation requested donations from the private sector to build a permanent structure.

Doctor Mayisela, one of the organisation’s leaders, said the Govan Mbeki Municipality must clarify the status of the clinic’s premises next to the Sijongile Ndamase Community Hall.

“Some people allege the stand was sold to businessmen. If this is true, we have a problem with the municipality.

“How can they sell a place meant to save lives to business people who want to enrich themselves?” asked Mayisela.

Mayisela said they would have a meeting with the municipality next month. Last year, the police arrested a security guard who allegedly stole medicine and medical supplies from two health facilities in eMbalenhle.

Doctor Mayisela, one of the Zimeleni Disabled Association’s leaders, addressed the elderly about what actions would be taken to build a permanent structure at Langverwacht Clinic.

The Langverwacht Clinic was one of them.

Sister Nomcebo Masilela, the Govan Mbeki sub-district clinics manager, told the association’s members at a previous meeting that the clinic sister had retired last year and the clinic had no manager.

She said the aged always had to queue outside, regardless of the weather. Masilela also said it was dangerous for them because drug addicts and criminals stayed at the Sijongile Ndamase Hall.

According to her, one granny was saved by the grace of God when addicts tried to rob her.
