Entries for Championship Boerewors competition now open

The winner will win a new Toyota Fortuner and R20 000 in cash.

Shoprite and Checkers call all chefs, cooks and boerewors enthusiasts to enter their sizzling recipes into the 31st annual Championship Boerewors competition.

Entries close on June 16, and the winner will walk away with the title of SA’s Boerewors Champion and a new Toyota Fortuner 2.4 GD6 RB MT valued at R650 000.

“Winning the competition was an incredible experience. I didn’t think I’d win on the first try. Now I know nothing can stop me from achieving what I want, not even my age,” said Welcome Magoso (24), last year’s winner.

“I encourage anyone with a good recipe to give it a go because it might change your life. My friends have been asking me how to enter, and I hope they do.”

The competition, launched in 1992, has attracted boerewors makers from all walks of life over the past three decades.

The winning boerewors will be for sale at Shoprite and Checkers stores nationwide. “The best part of winning the competition is seeing people purchase and enjoy something I created,” confirmed Magoso.

The competition is judged by a panel of culinary experts from the South African Chefs Association.

All recipes undergo a validation process and must adhere to the guidelines for making traditional boerewors. Once validated, the judges shortlisted 30 recipes before narrowing them down to the top 10 finalists.

Shoprite and Checkers then invite the top 10 finalists to a special event where they prepare and cook their boerewors for the judging panel. The winner is declared on the same day and walks away with incredible prizes and the esteemed Championship Boerewors maker title.

The winner and runners-up will take home:
• First prize: a new Toyota Fortuner and R20 000 in cash.
• Second prize: R50 000 in cash.
• Third prize: R30 000 in cash.
