eMba and Leandra police are concerned about suicides

“Families need to play an active role in monitoring their relatives’ daily lives and as the police, we urgently need to organise anti-suicide campaigns.”

Both eMbalenhle and Leandra police are concerned about the increase in suicide cases.

Constable Busi Mthethwa, police spokesperson, said almost every week police in eMbalenhle attend a scene where a person took his or her own life.

Mthethwa said those cases contribute negatively to their crime stats. Mthethwa appealed to members of the community to seek help if faced with challenges.

Constable Nontobeko Ngubeni, the Leandra police spokesperson, said they have six open inquest cases for this year.

Ngubeni said most of the deceased are young men who had either poisoned or hung themselves.

“Families need to play an active role in monitoring their relatives’ daily lives and as the police, we urgently need to organise anti-suicide campaigns.

“Soon we will be involving other government departments and social workers, local NPOs and spiritual leaders to visit the community and to discourage them from committing suicide,” said Ngubeni.
