Police arrest suspects in connection with unlicensed firearms in Volksrust area

A 9mm G2 pistol with the serial number filed off, four rounds of ammunition and one revolver with a serial number were discovered.

Mpumalanga police were successful in the arrest of four suspects in Volksrust on January 24 after members of the public provided information on firearms.

The suspects were apprehended in connection with the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

According to a media statement from the Department of Community Service, Safety and Liaison dated January 25, a grey VW Polo was seen driving through the streets of Vukuzakhe informal settlement.

The vehicle had four occupants. The police stopped the vehicle and searched it.

Police also found live ammunition for different calibres of weapons. The suspects were expected to appear in the Volksrust Magistrate’s Court on January 25.

According to police, the possibility of adding more charges cannot be ruled out.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, praised the community who worked with the police.

“We encourage communities to be vigilant about any suspicious criminal activity and to alert authorities,” Manamela said.
