Old-world charm returns to Cullinan

The aim is to encourage tourism.

Old-world charm is returning to the picturesque culturally rich diamond village of Cullinan with vintage street signs and names being erected in and around the village.

“I aim to establish old world charm to our historic town,” said Ward Clr JB Bekker.

He believes that the newly planted ornamental grass and new street signs will add value to the quaint shops and eateries that line the narrow streets of the town.

Cullinan has a rich history ranging from the largest diamond ever to be found (the Cullinan Diamond) and stories of Prisoners of War to weekend markets, and ghost and mines tours, to name but a few of the attractions, so by continually upgrading the town it will encourage tourism.

“I want to return Cullinan to its rightful place among other tourist-dependant villages,” said Bekker.

He said many people are attracted by and drawn to the old villages.

“The Heritage Society’s guidelines for businesses to use the correct detail and colour will add immense value to the upkeep of the village.

“The street name sign upgrade is merely the beginning of many projects that will reflect that intangible old world charm feeling everyone so much enjoys,” concluded Bekker.
