Social workers in eMbalenhle warn parents not to use children

That alone puts their lives in danger because criminals are also watching.

eMBALENHLE – Social workers from the offices of the Department of Social Development in eMbalenhle warned parents and organisations not to use children to get money either on the street or at events.

They said this after a five-year-old from eMbalenhle and her mother were spotted asking motorists for money at a traffic light in Secunda.

According to these social workers, that placed the child’s life at risk of being a target for child trafficking. The child was taken from the parent to a place of safety.

“Organisations must also stop sending children around to ask for money or donations.

“That puts the children’s lives in danger because criminals are also watching the children,” said a social worker.

“We are warning parents and the community that if we find out children are being used to get money, we will take the child and open criminal case against that parent or the organisation,” said a social worker.

These social workers said the community should know that children are among the most vulnerable in society and need special protection.

They also said it is the responsibility of parents, families, communities and the government to ensure that all children are safe from harm and grow up in nurturing environments and they have special legal rights which are enforced by the state and are entrenched in the Constitution of South Africa.
