Hijackers target motorist near Evander

Mthethwa said it is alleged that as they were driving to the destination he doesn't know, the men started searching him and took R400 cash in his trousers' pockets and also demanded bank cards plus his pin code.

A motorist was hijacked on the R546 near Evander on Sunday, October 9.

According to Constable Busi Mthethwa, spokesperson for eMbalenhle Police, a white VW Polo without a registration number overtook the man in his bakkie and then abruptly stopped.

The victim claimed that his bakkie bumped into the hijackers’ car. When he opened the window to check what was going on, three armed men scrambled out of the Polo.

One of the men jumped into the victim’s passenger seat while another gunman jerked open the driver’s door. The attackers dragged the motorist from the vehicle and forced him into the back of the bakkie.

Mthethwa said the hijackers droved to an unknown destination where they searched the motorist and took R400 from his pocket. They also demanded his bank cards and PIN.

They asked how much money the victim had in his bank accounts.

The hijackers drove straight to a petrol station to fill up the empty bakkie and then moved on to an open field.

During this time, the victim’s vehicle tracking company called his cellphone which was in the suspects’ possession of the suspects.

The robbers gave the man his cellphone to say that he was fine. The victim was then instructed to do a cash send transaction of R11 000.

The hijackers left the motorist in the veld as they drove off in his bakkie. A hijacking and robbery case was opened at the eMbalenhle Police Station.

No arrests have yet been made.
