Residents in Bronkhorstspruit and Cullinan area must hold back on the hose

Early last week, the City of Tshwane implemented Stage 2 water restrictions with immediate effect after Rand Water reported a significant drop in water levels.

In just two weeks, water levels dropped from 52% to 38%.

Residents are, however, not heading to warnings from the City, that if the high consumption continues, reservoir levels will drop dangerously low and eventually run dry.

“I can understand that there are water restrictions because the dams are really low at the moment with no rain being forecasted soon.

“I am not at all surprised by it,” said Renée Louw, a Cullinan local. If you want to plant plants then the best thing to do is to get water-wise plants. And take shorter showers.”

Under stage 2 water restrictions, residents may not use any form of hosepipe or irrigation systems to water gardens, nor may they use hosepipes to clean driveways and patios or wash vehicles.

Filling of swimming pools and water features is also strictly prohibited.

10 ways to use water more sparingly:
1. Use a displacement device in your toilet tank, either a filled water bottle or a brick, to reduce the amount of water being flushed.

2. Only use a toilet as it is intended to – do not flush cigarette buds or any other waste down it as this uses unnecessary water.

3. Take shorter showers or bucket baths.

4. Close taps when brushing teeth or shaving.

5. Where possible, share baths.

6. Run dishwashers only when full.

7. ash your clothes only when your washing machine is full.

8. Re-use as much water as possible.

9. Use a bucket of water to wash your car instead of hosing it down.

10. Get water-wise plants and cover your garden beds with mulch as it reduces evaporation by up to 70%.
