Woman arrested on Bethal Prison grounds with substances

The case was postponed to October 5 for a formal bail application.

A 36-year-old woman was caught when she allegedly tried to take drugs into the Bethal Correctional Centre on September 27.

The centre is working towards creating a “No-Go area for drugs” and the woman was reportedly caught before entering the premises to visit an inmate.

According to Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, Mpumalanga police spokesman, alleged drugs were found when the woman was reportedly searched as per prison standard procedures.

A black plastic bag was concealed in her underwear.

The bag was stuffed with 59 types of tablets, as well as 20 small plastic bags and other substances, including crushed leaves and a plastic bottle containing oil.

“Police were summoned to the scene where the woman was arrested and then charged for illegal possession of drugs. The estimated street value of the alleged drugs is about R6 000.”

Mohlala said the items were destined for an inmate.

He said the police and prison officials also searched the inmate‘s bed and found an additional plastic bag containing dagga.

“The inmate is facing a charge of possession of dagga. He will soon appear in court,” said Mohlala.

Lorraine Nomsa Makhubele appeared in the Bethal Magistrate’s Court today, September 28 on charges of alleged possession of drugs.

“Possible charges of drug trafficking might be added as the investigation continues,” said Mohlala.

The case was postponed to October 5 for a formal bail application.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has commended prison officials for their vigilance, the arrest and recovery of the items.
