Open electrical boxes in Govan Mbeki Municipality raise concern

Residents must report vandalism of electricity boxes to municipality and police.

Open electricity boxes in Secunda, Trichardt and surrounding areas are still a concern to residents.

Some of these boxes have been open for a long time and without locks, giving anybody access to tamper with them.

It also poses a danger to children playing outside in these areas.

The Ridge Times asked the Communications Department of Govan Mbeki Municipality for comment and Donald Green, acting manager of Communications, said the municipality’s electrical team is currently attending to open and unsafe electrical boxes on the lamp posts in Kinross.

“The team will be looking into the matter of exposed electrical wiring at meter boxes,” said Green.

“There is a widespread problem with municipal electrical boxes being illegally opened or vandalised.

“This not only puts the lives of residents at risk but can also cause significant large-scale damage to the electricity supply network.

“It is difficult to keep track of all the boxes and other components that are tampered with and that is why it is important for the community to immediately report such instances to the municipality, and to report theft to the police.”
