Two hijacked trucks and copper recovered at Modder East Orchids

The police found 38 tons of copper rods as well as 14 steel bins containing copper briquettes to the value of R6 million.

The recovery of two trucks and copper with an estimated value of R6 million has been highly commended in Mpumalanga.

Members of the security cluster summoned the Delmas Police at around 15:45 on Tuesday, July 5, to premises in the Modder East Orchids region.

Information received pertained to two possibly hijack trucks with copper cables on board.

A disruptive operation was conducted at the premises.

During the initial investigation, members managed to seize two trailers, which were then positively linked to a business robbery earlier in July in Kempton Park.

During this robbery, four trucks with trailers and copper were stolen.

The trailers on the other end were linked with another robbery case in Sunnyside during which two super links were stolen.

The police found 38 tons of copper rods as well as 14 steel bins containing copper briquettes to the value of R6 million.

The copper was apparently stolen during yet another business robbery at a factory that manufactures copper in Springs.

Other items found and seized during the operation included 13 rounds of ammunition for a 9mm pistol and a magazine.

Behind this great achievement, there was a collaboration between members from Delmas Police, Springs Crime Intelligence, AAA Security Company, Digit Recoveries, Titen Security, Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD), Truck Hijacking Unit (THU), BackUp Security Intervention Specialists, Ghost Guard Defensive Strategies and the CPI Security Company.

At the time of going to print no arrests have yet been made as there were no suspects to be found on the premises on the day of the operation.

According to the police, a serious attempt will be made to arrest the suspects.

The provincial commissioner of the police in Mpumalanga, Lieut-Gen Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has welcomed the recovery of the trucks and the suspected stolen copper.

“We are adamant that the suspects will be arrested and hopefully the public will come on board with information on the whereabouts of the suspects,” said Manamela.
