Hawks arrest woman in connection with drug-related offences

Drugs including nyaope, mandrax and dagga, with an estimated street value of more than R100 000, were confiscated.

The Hawks Serious Crime Investigation apprehended Mavis Themba Hlungwane (60) on February 6 in connection with possession of drugs and dealing in drugs.

According to a media statement from the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Hlungwane is a repeat offender.

The clusters in Secunda and Ermelo were deployed and she was remanded in custody.

Information was received about a shipment of drugs delivered at a bottle store of a well-known drug dealer in Standerton.

A disruptive search and seizure operation was conducted at the identified address.

According to the statement, drugs including nyaope, mandrax and dagga, with an estimated street value of more than R100 000, were confiscated.

The accused was detained and taken to court on Monday, February 7.

During preliminary investigation, it was established that the accused had been arrested several times since 1997 in connection with the same offences.

Hlungwane was eventually sentenced to 20 years imprisonment on October 30, 1997.

The case was postponed to Thursday, February 10 for a formal bail application.
