Ermelo residents disgusted and in disbelief over littering at Ermelo Sport-Inn

The Sport-Inn has for some time now been the new party hot-spot in town, after the Msukaligwa Municipaly closed down revelers’ usual hangout, the Pet Dam.

Shards of glass, empty bottles plastic and take-away food containers scattered everywhere – this was the scene after a recent party at the Ermelo Sport-inn on 13 March.

The Sport-Inn has for some time now been the new party hot-spot in town, after the Msukaligwa Municipaly closed down revelers’ usual hangout, the Pet Dam.

Though this preventative measure was taken during lockdown to avoid large gatherings and thus curbing Covid-19 infections, it has yielded little to no results.

Unfazed partygoers continue their midnight escapades – boozing away and littering to their hearts content – much to the annoyance of the community at large.

According to Ms Elize Neveling, resident of Ermelo, this is an ongoing occurrence.

“What does the police do about it?,” she asked on the Highvelder’s Facebook Page.

Ms Kiewiet Ahlfeldt, another resident who stays close to the area said this happens every weekend.

“We can barely watch television with all the racket going on.

“Additionally, there are no public restrooms, so people in attendance relieve themselves wherever they see fit.”

Mr Given Mpofu commented on the post and suggested the municipality puts down waste bins for these people.

Ms Rendani Mudanalwo Nkosi opposed this view and said at the Swanepoel Stadium there are waste bins, but every Monday she has to collect broken bottles from the tracks before she can exercise.

The general feeling of people commenting on the post was that of disgust and disbelief.

Several commenters also stated the responsible parties lacked integrity.

The Highvelder reached out to the local councilor responsible for ward 8, Ms Juliet Basson, Const Nomcebo Msezane, spokesman of Ermelo Police and Mr Mandla Zwane, spokesman of Msukaligwa Municipality.
