KINROSS – Residents of three streets in Thistle Grove have decided to empower themselves against crime.
Sgt Jabu Mnisi, a policeman who works in Secunda, but recently moved into this neighbourhood, was upset to hear his neighbours complain about a spate of burglaries and armed robberies in the block of Van der Ross Cresent, Curry Avenue and Claassen Cresent.
He decided to form a WhatsApp group for the neighbours, to get the community involved in the fight against crime.
“I contacted Capt David Mariri, the station commander at Kinross, and he agreed to a whistle project for residents in this area.
“Each household received a whistle to blow when in distress. This will alert the neighbours that something is wrong,” explained Sgt Mnisi.
The whistles were distributed among the neighbours at a small street meeting on Sunday night.
Capt Mariri and Sgt Mnisi explained the workings of a neighbourhood watch, how the community can look out for each other and how they can build a good relationship with the police.
