Resident receives rotten veggies from Government

EFF calls on Government to stop undermining the poor

eMBALENHLE – Ms Misper Gubevu allegedly received rotten vegetables from the government recently.

She said she applied for the government incentives at the Sassa offices and was promised to be given groceries worth R1 350.

Ms Gubevu was disappointed on the day the groceries were handed over, because the carrots, cabbage and butter nuts were rotten and some of the tins did not have an expiry date.

“They should not play with us because we are poor.

“I am scared my family will fall ill when we eat some of the food.

“I have asked the Economic Freedom Fighters to intervene, because the local councillor is nowhere to be found.”

Comm Kudumela Shai, Ext 10 EFF chairman, said this was disrespectful to the poor.

“The ruling party’s officials must not despise our officials.

“How can they give rotten food to people?

“We urge the local government to follow up the matter.”

Mr Senzeni Ngubeni, spokesman for Sassa, said they have a social relief of distress which is a temporary grant of assistance intended for someone in such need that they are unable to meet their or their families’ most basic needs.

He said in normal incidents the beneficiaries are given a voucher and are then sent to the contracted service provider.

“We no longer give food parcels on this grant.

“I do not know what happened, but I will ask the beneficiary to forward her details for further investigation.”
