House of Mercy Hospice in Secunda needs your help

Hospice needs money for a care worker

SECUNDA – House of Mercy Hospice in Secunda was founded by Ms Shirley Coetzer in 2018 and is a non-profit organisation that provides non-medical services to frail patients.

The hospice helps elderly or frail patients with personal hygiene and grooming, feeding, and ensuring that their medication are taken and that they receive all the love and care they need.

Ms Ilse Cooper who is also part of House of Mercy Hospice, said they began with two care workers and one patient in 2018 and has since then grown to nine employees and seven patients this year.

Ms Cooper said the lockdown is hard on them as the patients began to miss their loved ones and could not understand why they did not visit them anymore.

The care workers are staying at the premises of House of Mercy Hospice during the lockdown.

“We try our utmost best to be positive during this difficult time,” said Ms Cooper.

She said the hospice received support from Sasol, WBHO, AfriForum, Imraans, and the DA, the Dutch Reformed Church Goedehoop congregation, St Peters Church, Radio Jakaranda, Genade Plaas, Secunda Mall and the community.

Ms Cooper thanked these businesses and organisations and the community for food, clothes, masks, sanitisers and donations.

She said the hospice currently has a need for a care worker as they are short-staffed at the moment due to finances.

If you want to get involved with House of Mercy Hospice or want to reach out to them and support them, contact Ms Cooper at 084 337 0360 or send an e-mail to houseofmercyhospice@gmail.com.
