Covid-19: eMbalenhle residents get food parcels
An initiative that began to feed 100 families a week has since seen family, friends, strangers and the community come together to help others in need.
HIGHVELD – From the beginning of May, more than 2 000 families have been provided with meals during the lockdown period and this is all thanks to the generosity of the community and helping hands who came to the calling of Mr Imraan Salajee.
An initiative that began to feed 100 families a week has since seen families, friends, strangers and the community come together to help others in need.
“It is really sad to see so many people desperate to feed their families as they have lost their income due to the lockdown.
“It is not a milestone of which to be proud, it highlights the desperation of human beings that are barely surviving due to the lockdown,” said Mr Salajee.
Mr Salajee has been making up food hampers with money donated by helping hands community. These food hampers have seen families all around the area being fed.
Recently Mr Fanyana Sibanyoni, chairman of the Vukanini Taxi Association (Vukta), and his team collected 250 food parcels from Mr Salajee.
These parcels were distributed to residents of eMbalenhle.
“On behalf of the community, I thank Mr Salajee and all who have helped with contributions towards these food parcels,”said Mr Sibanyoni.
Mr Sibanyoni urges the community to continue helping where they can, as month end is fast approaching and the need for food parcels will be more as many families are facing financial difficulty.
Residents of Davies Court were also recipients of food parcels that were handed out on 7 May.
