Fighters battle it out

Young fighters excel at championships.

SECUNDA – The South African National Taekwondo Championships took place at the Lillian Ngoyi Centre on Saturday, 25 October and fighters from Pretoria, Johannesburg, Secunda, Middelburg and Machadodorp took part in the championships.

Altogether 340 students fought it out to win the championships.

The president of the Martial Arts Authority in South Africa, Master Louise Viviers was also at the championships and witnessed the fighters’ performance and standard.

She is authorised to award South African National and Presidents Development Colours to all successful students.

According to Mr Johann Beukes, Taekwondo instructor from Secunda, it was also also the lowering of 22 years of WTTU flag and logo and the roll out of their new ATA flag, logo and patches.

“From now on we will all be under one logo, namely ATA which means, Always Take Action.

“That means we are one of the biggest Martial Arts Organisation worldwide with more that 1,5 million affiliated Songahm Taekwondo students.

Richard van der Walt from Secunda won the sparring, form and weapons sections in the BU/8 age group and M. de Bruin from Pretoria was the first girl in the same age group.

F. Strydom from Pretoria was the winner in all three the above mentioned categories in the BU/9,10 and 11 age group and T. Louw, also from Pretoria was the winner among the girls in the sparring category in the same age group.

S. Louw, also from Pretoria won the form and weapons categories, she is also in the GU/9,10 and 11 age group.

M. Nel from eMalahleni (Witbank) was the winner in the sparring and form categories in the BU/12, 13 and 14 age group while D. Game was the first boy in the weapons category.

M. Ruthven from eMalahleni (Witbank) was the first GU/12, 13 and 14 age group in the sparring and weapons categories while D. Freeman from Secunda won the form category in the same age group.

Jaydee Freeman from Secunda won the sparring and form categories in the BU/15,16 and 17 age group.

S. Singh from Secunda won the sparring and weapons categories in the GU/15,16 and 17 age group while C. Wilson from Pretoria won the form category in the same age group.

JP Vorster from Secunda won the sparring and form categories in the age group for men between the ages of 18 and 29 and Ruan Verwey, also from Secunda, finished first in the weapons category in the same age group.

N. Holtzhausen from Pretoria won the sparring, form and weapons categories in the age group for women between 18 and 20.

A. Louw from Pretoria won the sparring and form categories for men between the ages of 30 and 30.

H. Delport from Pretoria won the sparring and form categories for women between the ages of 30 and 39 and A. Wedel, also from Pretoria won the weapons category in the same age group.

Gavin Rayd from Johannesburg won the sparring and weapons category in the age group for men of 40 years old and older and P. Ruthven, also from Johannesburg won the form category in the same age group.

M. Katze, also from Johannesburg won the sparring and weapons category in the age group for women of 40 years old and older and A. Engelbrecht, also from Johannesburg won the form category in the same age group.
