Leandra Fire Station now operating

Sasol Mining handed over the Leandra Fire Station to the Govan Mbeki Municipality on Friday, 24 October.

LEANDRA – Ms Maureen Mboshane, vice president of Public and Regulatory Affairs from Sasol says the huge backlog in municipal infrastructure maintenance and development can be eliminated by support of the private sector.

She said this at the handover of the Leandra Fire Station, fire fighting equipment and emergency response vehicles worth over R10 million to Govan Mbeki Municipality on Friday, 24 October.

“Our country faces many challenges to maintain and improve the existing infrastructure, besides embarking on news projects.

“This is vital to ensure that opportunities for economic development are created and municipal services provided to as many of our citizens as possible.

“Sasol announced in 2012 that a total investment of R200 million was to be made to the Govan Mbeki Municipality and the Metsimaholo Municipality in the Free State.

“Sasol is proud to announce that more than 10 projects benefiting these communities have been completed already.”

The construction of the fire station forms part of Sasol Mining’s Social and Labour Plan (SLP) commitments.

An agreement was signed in 2012 between Sasol and the Govan Mbeki Municipality to identify projects, improve service delivery and infrastructure development in the area.

As part of its SLP commitments, Sasol Mining has also completed the construction of a number of foot bridges in eMbalenhle, repair of the Kinross reservoir, storm water drainage in Lebohang, eMzinoni community health centres and sewage removal trucks in Charl Cilliers.

Ms Lindi Masina, executive mayor, thanked Sasol for the role they continue to play in the improvement of the Govan Mbeki Mucipality area.

“This state-of-the-art facility will bring relief to our people and we know that areas are potential victims to natural disasters and fire which unleash devastating damage to our people and possessions.

“We urge our community to use this facility to deal with fires.”
