Kwaza speaks about men being abused

A forum is being launched to deal with men being abused and domestic violence.

eMBALENHLE – Mr Abraham Kwaza (73) said many men are being subjected to emotional or physical abuse by their partners, but they are too scared to talk about it.

“This might sound a bit strange, but there are men who have resorted to alcohol abuse as a way of wiping away their tears.

“Men end up killing their partners and their children before killing themselves when they realise they have endured enough pain and cannot take it anymore.

“When this happens, we condemn the man’s actions without bothering to check what had led to it.”

Mr Kwaza is among the leaders who are trying to set up a forum for men that will deal with domestic abuse and violence against men.

It will be registered with the Department of Social Development and will provide information, support and training for affected men.

Mr Kwaza suffered emotional abuse at the hands of his spouse until they separated two years ago.

“I never resorted to violence and decided to speak to other men about my problem.”

Mr Kwaza described the abuse of men by women in the area as a “hidden crime”.

“Men are being arrested for false rapes and some are being falsely restrained from visiting their homes and children.

“Men are losing their rights and freedom.”

Mr Kwaza is also a public relations officer for the Sector 3 Crime Forum and his committee has dealt with abuse-related issues against men.

He and his committee noticed that there were no support systems for local men who are suffering from domestic abuse and violence.

Mr Kwaza urged men to speak out about their abuse to avoid situations where the innocent lives of children are taken.

“The police should treat men with dignity when they try to report their ordeals.

“All kinds of abuse should be taken seriously, no matter who the victims are.”
