eMbalenhle Police warn against vigilantes

Two men killed in mob justice at Kusasalethu Comprehensive School.

eMBALENHLE – Capt Magonseni Nkosi, spokesman for the local police, could not say how many people had been killed by vigilantes in the area in the past few months.

“However, we condemn acts of vigilantism.

“We will not allow people to take the law into their own hands and we cannot allow the public to punish suspected criminals.

“Those who are responsible for these violent crimes are criminals themselves and will be dealt with accordingly.”

Capt Nkosi was responding to the incident of two men who died after being beaten by pupils from Kusasalethu Comprehensive School for allegedly stealing the handbag of a 30-year-old woman on Wednesday, 27 August.

He said there are several initiatives to reduce vigilante attacks and make people aware of the dangers of taking part in them.

“We do hold meetings, outreaches, campaigns and road shows to discourage such acts.”
