These two trainers from the Unicor Club in Bethal meet young boys at Laerskool Standerton on Wednesdays from 1.30pm to 4pm to convey their knowledge of the sport, wrestling.

As opponents they took on each other in the past and their views dovetail on the benefits of the sport.

“It helps first of all with self-confidence and discipline,” Rudolph said.

“Agility, self-control, hand-and-eye-coordination and stamina follow.”

Rudolph achieved junior Protea-status and has been involved with wrestling for 18 years.

Lukas’ perspective alluded to ills in society and what youngsters are exposed to in communities.

“Wrestling teaches one not to get involved in fighting, drugs and drinking,” Lukas said.

“A good attitude and respect for yourself and other people are built in.” He has been wrestling and training for 21 years.

The Standerton Advertiser watched the stretching exercises towards the end of one of their sessions on Wednesday, 5 February with Rudolph calmly ending the boys’ practice.

Rudolph suggested the age of five years as suitable to begin training.

“You can wrestle till the day you lay down your head,” he concluded.
