Why are some learners not placed in schools yet?

"We will submit parliamentary questions to Mpumalanga Education MEC, Mr Bonakele Majuba, with regard to the spending and reasons why learners are still being left behind," the statement concluded.

Ms Jane Sithole, DA-spokesman on education in Mpumalanga, issued a press release on 15 January, citing that R5-billion was spent on infrastructure, yet Mpumalanga still struggle to place learners in schools.

According to the statement, the Mpumalanga Department of Education has spent that amount in the last five years on school infrastructure.

“The department has many projects, however they are years away of being completed and learners are bearing the brunt of dubious tenders, shoddy workmanship, or abandonment of the project before they are completed,” Ms Sithole said.

According to her, the Auditor General (AG) has found in its Provincial Audit outcomes for 2018/19 that projects recently built by the provincial department of education did not adequately guide the design, nor did they provide appropriate corrective measures where deficiencies existed.

“We will submit parliamentary questions to Mpumalanga Education MEC, Mr Bonakele Majuba, with regard to the spending and reasons why learners are still being left behind,” the statement concluded.
