On matches played on Wednesday, Leicester stormed to a 2-0 win over Watford to reclaim their second spot, Chelsea saw their leading scorer Tammy Abraham return with a goal after some weeks on the sidelines to condemn battling Aston Villa 2-1. Jose Mourinho’s first game as an opposing manager at Old Trafford saw his Tottenham side lose 2-1 to a well-oiled Manchester United, thanks to a Marcus Rashford brace.

There were also wins for Southampton and Wolves a home to Norwich and West Ham respectively, with Wolves registering an incredible run of 7 matches without defeat.

The final match of the night saw Liverpool consolidate their grip on the perch after dispatching struggling Merseyside rivals Everton 5-2 in what is touted as the last match for Mario Silva as Everton boss. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp gambled with his starting 11, but the 4-2 halftime score told just how comfortable he will be rotating his players over the upcoming busy period.

As it stands

The top four slots look to have been rubber-stamped, for now. It is witnessing the usual suspects with runaway leaders Liverpool leading with 43 points, Leicester City second with 35, Manchester City third with 32, and Chelsea fourth with 29, six points ahead of fifth-placed Wolves.

Manchester United, Crystal palace, Tottenham, Sheffield United, and Arsenal complete the top ten spots. Arsenal welcome Brighton, and Newcastle are away to Sheffield United on Thursday to complete the midweek fixtures.

At the other end of the table, Watford look to have made the bottom spot their own, with only 8 points after 15 matches. Norwich are 19th, 2 points better than Watford, with Everton at 18th with 14 points. Interestingly, only 2 points separate 12th placed Bournemouth and 18th placed Everton, meaning that we could be witnessing a very interesting run in the relegation battle.

The next round of EPL matches will see the Manchester derby at the Etihad on Saturday, Liverpool travel to Bournemouth, and Chelsea travel to Everton. Leicester will be up against Aston Villa at the Villa Park on Sunday, with another pulsating London derby pitting West Ham and Arsenal at the Olympic Stadium on the same day.
