Kasselman issues safety tips

Kasselman Security Services (KSS) issued a statement on how load shedding can affect security.

Kasselman Security Services (KSS) issued a statement on how load shedding can affect security.

Alarms:
With constant power failures, often twice in one area daily, alarm batteries will begin to fail, meaning alarms will not be able to send signals.

Every time the power goes out , KSS experiences extremely high call volumes and requested residents to call after any accidental activation.

If your alarm battery has been in use for more than six months, it is strongly recommended that it be replaced, especially when going away.

When going away, a trusted person is needed to regularly check that the alarm is functioning.

Constant load shedding makes the monitoring of power failures ineffective as thousands of power failures will occur daily.

Generators:
Generator theft will heavily increase as the re-sale value will increase because of load shedding.

Make sure to use a generator in a well-ventilated area as fumes are toxic.

Remember to lock it up after use to avoid theft.

Never refuel a generator while it is operating and store reserve fuel carefully to avoid a fire hazard.

Gate Motors:
Gate motor theft will also increase as their batteries will be sought by many.

Have a secure bracket installed.

Remember to have an alternative access point other than just an electric motor to your yard.

Gate motor batteries will also begin to fail due to load shedding, meaning that if it is the only access, emergency services and security won’t be able to enter when needed.

Appliances and general safety:
Fridges and other appliances could also be affected.

Have a trusted person check on appliances while you are away.

Rather not stock up on food before leaving.

Storing frozen foods with a trusted person who is not going away, is advisable.

Candles and lamps pose a fire hazard and there are great alternative light sources such as affordable solar lamps.

Do not just rely on cell phone communication as cell towers could also be affected.

A neighbour is the closest support, get to know them and help one another.

Remember to check all electrical aspects regarding your mobility, gate motors and electronic garage doors – have alternative ways of entering and exiting your premises, should there be an emergency and there is no power.
