Dean and Mieke chosen to perform in Florida, America

Dean is proficient in the hip-hop genre, while Mieke concentrates on contemporary dancing and acrobatics.

Dean du Preez and Mieke Swart from Standerton have stars in the eyes, partly due to their friendship as well as the opportunity to see America next year.

Both were chosen to take part in the International Talent Showcase where aspiring models, actors, singers and dancers connect with top modelling agencies, leading agents, managers and casting directors.

Baco Raton, Florida is where it could happen from 17 to 27 July for these two learners from Hoërskool Standerton, who participated earlier this year in the Cansa Socialite-competition.

An opportunity was given to sing, dance, act or model for a worthy cause and more than 70 learners in Standerton registered.

Industry leaders were scouting for fresh talent and then a chance was given to attend the gala-event at Carnival City from 5 to 7 October.

According to Ms Janelise Roux, volunteer of Cansa who has a solid background in opera, the town has talented learners in abundance.

“It offers an opportunity to be socially conscious and take responsibility of your community,” Ms Giséle Bosman, formerly part of Cansa, said.

Their recent performances at Carnival City under the watchful eyes of the judges led to the breakthrough.

Oh yes, dancing is considered an Olympic sport.

“It is very competitive,” Dean admitted.

Dean has been dancing for six years, Mieke beats him by four years, both go religiously to their dancing classes and do not neglect their daily exercise regimen.

“I try to practice an hour daily and attend the dance school on Wednesdays,” Mieke said. “I practice free style an hour daily,” Dean contributed.

They nearly forgot to mention their professional training on Tuesdays.

Dean and Mieke enthusiastically embrace the idea of being in the limelight, have no intention of settling for second best and the little obstacle of passing Grade 11 next year, does not interfere with their dreams.

Talking about obstacles, no financial injection is on the cards and sponsorships will not be sneered at.

Dean’s mother Sylnette, had the last say about her offspring travelling overseas.

“It is tough, but he has to spread his wings.”
