Back to the CBD and town where messages on social media were coming in fast and furious on 17 October about no water supply in streets such as Berg, Caledon and Stander which were in stark contrast to a photo of a leak at Hoërskool George Hofmeyr with water flowing down the street.

The Standerton Advertiser, accompanied by the DA Member of Parliament, Ms Angel Khanyile, recently visited a house in Ndhlovu Street in Sakhile to gain first-hand knowledge of a sewage spillage.

A concerned friend pressed the urgency home of the spillage, indicating the foundations of the house could cave in.

Ms Rebecca Ntombifuthi showed us a leak outside the home of her father and according to her, the Lekwa Municipality was notified about the matter in August, but no repairs have yet been done.

That part of the area falls under Ward 2.

According to the resident, locals used sand bags to prevent water from reaching the inside of their homes.

Water leakages in streets such as Buiten, Krogh, Walter Sisulu Drive and near Kosmos Retirement Village were also reported. Spare a thought for the people keeping track of the logistics.

“I will report the leakages again,” Mr Rosier de Ville, DA-councillor in Ward 10, said on Tuesday, 15 October.

“It is important that not a single drop of water be wasted.”

Turning back the clock, the SACP held a march at the intersection of Coligny and Schwickard Streets on 10 August, the Facebook-page of ‘SAVE the Vaal Environment’ drove the point home and AfriForum got involved, supplying the newspaper with a list of water and sewage leaks.

The list was handed to Ms Mtshiselwa at the end of May and a press conference was on the cards before the end of June.
