VIDEO – CCTV-footage shows Kas Roeloffze a day before he is murdered

Police initially suspected that Mr Roeloffze had been dead for two to three days and CCTV footage shows him entering his residence’s yard the day before.

The girlfriend of the late Mr Kas Roeloffze has opened up to the Standerton Advertiser about who he was, their relationship and the events that led up to his death.

Ms Charmaine de Jager was identified as the police’s suspect.

The Standerton Police believe that she killed her boyfriend by stabbing him in the sternum (chest bone) with a kitchen knife.

She was arrested, but released on 5 October.

(CORRECTION: The Standerton Advertiser reported that Ms De Jager was arrested and released on 3 October. According to Capt Fanie Nhlabathi, Standerton Police Station’s communications officer, she was arrested on 3 October and released on 5 October.)

Police’s investigation is pending and she has not been charged in court.

Ms De Jager denied killing Mr Roeloffze and said she believes he committed suicide, her neighbour, Deon Smit shared the same theory with the newspaper.

During her interview with the publication, she recalled having met Mr Roeloffze in Tshwane (Pretoria) about seven years ago.

“The relationship was initially good and we were happy.”

When asked about Kas’ unemployment situation, she admitted that it did cause friction between them, as being the sole breadwinner weighed heavily on her shoulders.

“I bought everything and took care of him,” she said.

According to a reliable source, Mr Roeloffze was dismissed from his job in August for continuous misconduct.

“He would come to work under the influence or would drink on the job,” the source told the Advertiser.

Ms De Jager also stated that there was a turning point in the relationship after alcohol was introduced into the equation.

“He drank heavily and began drinking his whiskey straight from the bottle, without mixing it.”

She alleged that he became aggressive and abusive even though she tried to help him to curb his drinking habit.

A source close to Mr Roeloffze however, told the newspaper that Ms De Jager herself drank.

This was confirmed by Ms de Jager.

Their relationship reportedly had its fair share of turmoil.

An altercation between the two erupted on 14 July and she stabbed him in the back with a knife, an act she qualified as self-defence, after allegedly being strangled by Mr Roeloffze.

When asked why she did not open a case against him for the alleged abuse or did not get out of the relationship, she said it was because she loved him.
