Medical world converges in GSDM for diabetes lecture

The purpose of the lecture was to have doctors interact and share vital information about diabetes care in the public healthcare facilities.

The Mpumalanga Department of Health (DoH) hosted an integrated diabetes care lecture at the Gert Sibande District Municipality auditorium on Thursday, 6 December.

The purpose of the lecture was to have doctors interact and share vital information about diabetes and care thereof in public healthcare facilities.

Prof Danie Van Zyl from the University of Pretoria facilitated with a lecture by addressing doctors about diabetes care in the public healthcare setting.

“Diabetes is a progressive disease that works with other diseases to affect your body, but it can be treated and controlled if you modify your lifestyle, therefore doctors should effectively execute quality of care for diabetes by empowering and encouraging patients to go for eye tests so that they can avoid any further complications that may make it difficult to treat the disease,” Prof Van Zyl said.

DoH hosts such events to furnish doctors with additional health knowledge so that the quality of public healthcare is of an ideal standard.

The lecture was also a platform for information-sharing, demonstrations and interactive sessions with the Ermelo Diabetes team, Hemocue SA (Pty) Ltd and Mzansi Ethical Research Committee (MERC) manning stalls and showcasing their services to the numerous doctors who were in attendance.

The lecture also forms part of the Gert Sibande District Municipality Health Summit.
