Water is a precious gift, so Sunlight knew exactly how to help the people of Pangoville
The Caring Angels Community Centre is known to be a light in the dark for Pangoville residents in desperate need. But with just 6 taps in the entire area, the problems are only made worse. Sunlight knew how to help.
The township of Munsieville is well known to residents of the West Rand; and, because of the actions of a famous son, it will be remembered forever in history books. It is where Nobel Peace Prize winner, Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu, grew from an eager young boy into a man that would defy the powerful apartheid government. Just next to Munsieville is a newer informal settlement, Pangoville. It began in late 2014, and today has over 350 residents. Like so many people in underprivileged settlements, erratic and unpredictable water supply has been a cause of great concern and suffering.
The Caring Angels Community Centre, headed by Hugo van Niekerk, does incredible work for Pangoville residents, and is known to be a light in the dark for those in desperate need. But with just 6 taps in the entire area, the problems they face on a daily basis are only made worse. At Sunlight, we knew we could make a lasting contribution to securing water supply in a sustainable manner, thereby alleviating the Community Centre’s water crisis.
As part of our nationwide #SunlightSavesWater campaign, Sunlight donated 80 JoJo Tanks to needy communities and organisations all around South Africa. We were extremely happy to hand over 2 of these 5000 litre tanks to the Caring Angels Community Centre.
When Sunlight representative, Elizabeth Mokwena, arrived at the Community Centre, the smile on Mr van Niekerk’s face let her know that the value of water should never be underestimated, and that our contribution would make a difference in the lives of over 350 deserving Pangoville residents.
Mr van Niekerk remarked, “This is a wonderful gift as we are sometimes left without water when the municipality upgrades the water pipelines. In the past we were sometimes left without water for more than five days. Now we have some security regarding this resource”.
One of the tanks will receive rainwater channelled into it by specialised gutters that were also installed. Ms. Mokwena pointed out that just one day’s heavy rains would be sufficient to fill the 5000 L tank. The second tank will be a reservoir for the storage of municipal water. Additionally, both contain filtering systems to ensure that the water is clean and safe for use.
Sunlight couldn’t be more proud of the good work South Africans are doing in challenging times, and the Caring Angels Community Centre is no exception.
